The USNS Comfort, a 1,000-plus bed Navy medical ship used in rescue and outreach campaigns around the world docked in New York City Monday afternoon to assist New York metro area hospitals in the fight against the Coronavirus.
NYC has seen Cases skyrocket in the past week of up to 37,000 and counting causing thousands of NYC residents to panic as both Gov. Cuomo and Mayor DeBlasio scrambled to provide the necessary medical equipment for hospitals and medical staff at the epicenter of the American outbreak.
Deblasio welcomed the Ship on Monday afternoon saying he was overwhelmed with emotion as he saw the massive white ship emblazoned with red crosses plow through the waters of New York Harbor and dock at Pier 90 on Manhattan’s West Side, where officials have said it will remain as long as it is needed.
Governor Andrew Cuomo tweeted:
People infected with the virus will not be treated on the ship, which de Blasio said would start accepting patients “immediately,” or at the 1,000-bed field hospital constructed at the Jacob K. Javits Center.
